Onwards to Barbuda

After so many idyllic sails in flat turquoise sea, we were due for a boisterous sail.  We had made it up the Antiguan coast to Green Island where we had spent a few days.  The weather wasn’t looking like it was going to improve much over the next week, so we decided to batten down the hatches and just go for it.

Navigating our way out of the coral maze was fun.  The chart plotter was off by a fair amount, enough to be the difference between being in the middle of the channel, and being on top of a reef.  But the reefs were as visible as if they were islands, so it required only a good look out.  Once we had made it past the reef, the depth was still shallow, creating the odd Monster Wave that threatened to break across our beam.  Once out in the ocean (it is technically the Atlantic) it was more consistent and less exciting.

As we approached Barbuda we were reminded of Anegada.  We could only see Barbuda once we were about 30 minutes out, and even then it was just a smear above the water line.  We headed into Cocoa Point and it’s a beautiful deserted white beach.  As we got closer, it just got better and better.  There were only two other boats, and a couple of hotel guests to share the beach with. We took long walks on the beach, chased crabs and played in the crystal clear water. Everything that Anegada promised, Barbuda actually delivered.

Only 10 minutes out

Small fish took up residence under our boat.  Larger fish came to gobble them up, as did the pelicans.  We had a wonderful spectacle of fish jumping all around us, and pelicans diving just metres from the boat.
